Why GUS exists

Every kid deserves someone in their corner. We make sure they have one.

Our mission is to empower underserved youth and communities through transformative programs that promote personal growth, strengthen unity, and cultivate long-term success — through education, support services, and skill-building opportunities.

Our story began with the Police Athletic League — the program that shaped our founder's own path. GUS exists to pay that forward.

“No potential goes untapped. No barrier left standing.”
  • We meet basic needs firstA student can't focus on algebra without a coat, sneakers, or supplies. Dignity comes before everything else.
  • We work inside the systemNYC DOE educators serve on our staff and board — we reach students through real relationships in real schools.
  • We stay for the long runFrom tutoring to job readiness, we support young people at every stage — not just one moment.

Stories of impact

Don't take our word for it

Educators, social workers, and students — in their own words.

“As a school social worker, I've witnessed firsthand the incredible impact of Growth, Unity & Success. Their partnership has provided our students with essential items — from school supplies to warm coats — ensuring their basic needs are met so they can focus on learning.”

LaRelle Gee, LMSWSchool Social Worker

“Seeing a student walk upright with confidence because they have a brand-new book bag or sneakers is evidence of how much of an impact GUS has on the community. Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference.”

Malawi BraceySchool Culture Liaison, MS 358, Jamaica NY

“When I was struggling, GUS didn't judge or try to ‘fix' everything — they showed up, listened, and made sure I knew I wasn't alone. Having someone like that in your corner can change everything.”

Meet the founder

Built by someone who lived it

Gus is a New York City educator, coach, and youth mentor. A former NYC Department of Education employee, he coaches basketball, golf, and floor hockey, and works daily alongside guidance counselors helping teenagers become self-advocates.

His own trajectory was shaped by the Police Athletic League — proof that one program, one mentor, one season can change a life. GUS was founded to be that program for the next generation, with current NYC DOE educators serving on its staff and board.
